What YOU can do.

Animal research is a huge industry and it can sometimes be daunting to realise that those of us who oppose animal experiments are up against major pharmaceutical companies, university academics, research establishments, commercial companies and governments.

BUT…

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

We can all make a difference just by making simple changes in our daily lives.

Buy Cruelty-Free

When purchasing cosmetics and household products, choose those which have not been tested on animals. Not only will you be withdrawing your financial support from companies which continue to conduct cruel product testing, but you will also be supporting those ethical companies that are proving that it is unnecessary.

Refuse to donate to animal-based research

Similarly, when you make a donation to a health charity, check first whether your money will be likely to go toward medical research on animals. There are medical charities that do not fund animal experiments. By supporting those on the Humane Charities list, you will be redirecting vital funding towards health charities who recognise that real medical progress can only be made through studying our own species and abandoning the use of animal experiments. Check our list of Humane Charities to discover which do NOT use animals. www.humanecharities.org.au

Learn about the issues

Knowledge is by far our greatest tool and we each need to be in a position to dispute vivisector's arguments that animal use is at all necessary. It is therefore invaluable to read up on these issues and inform others.

It's so easy to be bamboozled by academics who quote examples, often in scientific terms, of the necessity to use animals in their work. We know that animal research is wrong – both ethically and scientifically – but we need to back up our claims with sound arguments and credible information and not rely on emotive ploys. Our fact sheets should assist you.

There are also a number of excellent books written by people in the medical profession that provide good arguments against animal use in medical research. Contact HRA to obtain more information about our borrowing library.

Inform others

Consider introducing a friend to HRA – either by inviting them to a social event or joining them up as a member. The stronger and larger our organization becomes, the more people we will be able to reach and achieve a greater impact in our fight to end animal experiments.

You may also consider setting up a display at your local library or school. HRA can assist you by providing brochures and posters.

Subject to location and availability, HRA can also provide a guest speaker to attend your school or social club.

Write letters and emails

The letters page is one of the most widely read sections of the newspapers – and a great way to raise awareness about animal experiments.

Requests for donations to health charities can be responded to by asking whether they fund animal research and informing them that you will only support those listed on the Humane Charities List.

Letters and emails can also be sent to politicians and companies. Remember to always be polite when expressing your opinion, tell them what you want them to do and why, and always ensure that the information you provide to them is correct.

Display your message

Stickers and t-shirts are a great way of raising awareness. With so many people being unaware of what happens in animal laboratories simple messages are good to plant seeds of thought and can initiate people wanting to know more and getting involved in our campaigns.
