Many ordinary Australians are taking a growing interest in making informed choices, particularly when it comes to the charities they support financially. We are often contacted by members of the public regarding the animal testing policy of different charities. Most share an eagerness to support human health as well as animal interests.
Balancing these concerns can be difficult because many popular health charities fund animal research, often without making it clear to the public. As a result, the public continues to donate money with the best of intentions to medical and health charities not realising that they may actually be funding unnecessary animal experiments.
Animal testing causes pain, suffering and death to animals, yielding information of minimal if any relevance to humans. Time and again, relying on animal testing has failed to predict dangerous side effects of substances, and failed to identify helpful medicines. There are so many other, more advanced, accurate, time and cost effective methods to replace animal models in laboratories, it is ludicrous that there are still charities prepared to fund animal research.
The Humane Charities list is a guide to health-related charities that do not engage in animal research. The charities listed vary greatly in the health-related aspects they offer; some fund bio-medical research, others provide health services to people requiring care, and many provide information and support. The one thing they share is a vision for improved human health.
By donating to a Humane Charity on this list, you will be directing vital funding towards organisations that do not fund animal testing.
Humane Charities is a non-profit program administered by Humane Research Australia (HRA). We are dedicated to reducing the impact of animal experimentation on the Australian community and animals.
Our aim is to contribute to the abolition of animal experimentation by:
Our vital work will ultimately help both humans, by contributing to the discovery and production of safer medicines, and laboratory animals, by replacing their use as human models.
The Humane Charities List is a guide to health-related charities that do not fund or engage in animal testing.
The Humane Charities List has been compiled based on written applications by charities that respond to a questionnaire and sign a declaration before being approved.
By donating to any of the charities on this list, you will be directing vital funding towards organisations that do not fund animal testing.
If your favourite charity is not listed here and does not fund animal research, please encourage them to contact us or down load the application for listing from this website. You may also send us their contact details and we will approach them to verify whether they qualify for listing.
We understand that people often seek to support particular causes – especially one that has touched them personally. The Humane Charities List provides a choice of organisations with expertise in a number of different fields. Please use this list to encourage family, friends and colleagues to support health charities that do not invest in animal testing.

| Yooralla | [-] |
Aims and Activities: Yooralla has been giving encouragement and support to Victorians with disabilities since 1918. Thousands of children and adults with disabilities have been assisted to experience productive and satisfying lives, with more independence and choices than they might otherwise have had.
Today’s Yooralla provides essential services for children and adults with disabilities, their families and carers, that include a range of accommodation alternatives, respite, in-home support, therapy, attendant care, specialised equipment, employment, recreation, information and training, and practical skills for daily living.
Yooralla’s services are shaped to provide support and encouragement to Victorians who are born with disabilities, but also to those who have acquired disabilites from accidents, ill health and aging.
Even though Australia is a developed nation, the incidence of disability is high and rising. As a specialist service provider, Yooralla will work with all its stakeholders to meet the legitimate and growing expectations of people with disabilities for a more inclusive, barrier free society.
Policy on animal research: Yooralla does not take part in or support the use of non-human animals for any research purposes, including medical research.
